Taming The Corporate Iphone

iPhones have become the ice cream of the corporate mobility space. The wide screen and slick user interface are irresistible and the countless applications are the toppings that create innumerable "flavors" to choose from.

However, while I scream, you scream, we all may scream for iPhones, in the corporate world, they can be little more than empty calories when not properly managed.  iPhones can be complicated to support and present data security concerns that must be considered.

Luckily, there are tactics available to you to ease the burden on your IT team, help  your iPhone users perform at their peak, and allow you to integrate the iPhone into your mobile device offerings without undue risk.  Integrated Mobile offers the following tips:

Update your Wireless Policy

While your Wireless Policy cannot physically prevent a user from downloading one of the over 100,000 applications that may or may not be appropriate for your business, it is your first line of defense helping you gain control of the countless ways that iPhone users can use (or misuse) their devices.

In addition to defining how iPhones and other devices are to be deployed, administered, and supported, your Wireless Policy should cover social networking, texting, acceptable applications, internet downloads, etc. You may also stipulate the use of a VPN whenever accessing corporate data over Wi-Fi.

Start your iPhone Users off Right

Procurement sets the stage for proper usage going forward.  A new iPhone should land in the user's hands with the plan, accessories, applications, email setup, and configuration settings outlined in your Wireless Policy. This will allow the user to start working right away and improve the chances of adherence to your Wireless Policy going forward.

Your mobile asset management team may also wish to use the Restrictions functionality available on the iPhone.  Located in Settings -> General -> Restrictions, this area is protected by a passcode and enables an authorized user to prevent access to certain functionality including: YouTube, application installation, the camera, movies, etc.

Secure your iPhones

As with all mobile devices, security is extremely important. The iPhone 3GS protects data by encrypting information in transmission, at rest on the device, and when backed up to iTunes. Other features and settings can help prevent unauthorized use of the device.

- Take advantage of the Passcode Lock functionality -

Whenever the device's display locks, whether due to Auto-Lock or the iPhone Sleep button, Passcode Lock requires a four-digit code to be entered before the device can be accessed again. The Passcode Lock configuration area also has an Erase Data option, which enables a complete wipe of your iPhone after 10 failed passcode attempts. This functionality can be used to guard against data loss in the event of a lost or stolen phone.

- Be careful with Wi-Fi -

While the iPhone lets you connect to high-speed wireless networks for faster Web browsing and better data coverage, employing Wi-Fi networks without taking the proper security precautions can leave the device open to hackers. Only connect to Wi-Fi networks using Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) or another wireless security protocol. (You should be prompted for a password when you connect.) Then, to ensure that you don't unknowingly connect to Wi-Fi networks while on the go, you should enable the iPhone's Ask to Join Networks function.

- Connect to your Organization's Virtual Private Network (VPN) –

VPNs use an encrypted Internet connection that acts as a secure "tunnel" for data. They are often used within organizations to enable users to securely access the company's network behind a firewall.

The iPhone supports VPNs that use the L2TP, PPTP, Cisco IPSec, and a number of other VPN protocols, and it works over both Wi-Fi and cellular data network connections.

To configure your iPhone's VPN, go to Settings -> General -> Network -> VPN and then choose "Add VPN Configuration". Ask your network administrator which settings to use. In most cases, if you've set up a similar VPN on your computer, you can use the same VPN settings for your device.

- Access your email securely -

Many companies use Microsoft Exchange Server, which enforces its security protocols through the iPhone.  With the introduction of Lotus iNotes ultralite, Lotus Notes users can also securely receive their corporate mail via the iPhone.

For web mail, check your iPhone email settings to make sure you are using secure sockets layer (SSL) which encrypts mail that is sent and received via the device. Or, access your email portal through Safari using SSL.  Use https://... instead of http://... and check for the image of the lock at the bottom of the screen.

- Optimize your Safari Browser Security Settings -

Most iPhone Safari security settings are turned on by default but can be modified by clicking the iPhone Settings icon and then scrolling down and selecting Safari.  Make sure that the Block Pop-ups button is switched to "On". Then, check your Safari cookies settings.  By default, the iPhone Safari Accept Cookies function is set to "From Visited", but you may want to disable cookies completely by selecting "Never".

Support your iPhone Users

Although the iPhone OS is comparatively stable and the interface is user-friendly, issues and questions will arise. The last thing you need is an iPhone user who cannot be productive because they are on hold with Apple or are unable to obtain support.

To keep your mobile users performing at their peak, make sure that you have resources on-hand to answer questions, resolve issues, and fix or replace broken devices. Whether you hire internal IT staff or outsource to the mobility specialists at Integrated Mobile, quality support is key to a productive mobile workforce.

Remote Administration

Your mobile workforce is, by definition, mobile. This can present challenges for those responsible for securing and configuring devices for remote users. Data may also need to be remotely wiped from lost or stolen devices.

A number of companies such as Good Technologies, Sybase, Dell, and Apple themselves have developed remote administration solutions for iPhones. Costs and feature-sets vary widely. Consult the experts at Integrated Mobile to determine which solution best meets your organization's needs.

Is Skype a Good Corporate Tool?

The new age of information technology is strong in all corporations, and people understand that there are fast and easy methods of communication that haven't been available before. One of the most modern being the Instant Messaging tool, in any form possible. And the most popular form of the day is Skype.

Furthermore, the modern corporate employees view the ability to use Skype at work as their constitutional right, not a corporate privilege. But let's observe the pitfalls of Skype usage in corporate communication:

Skype is designed to be an Internet communication tool - This means that each SkypeClient MUST connect to a SuperNode somewhere on the internet
The Skype protocol is designed to enable communication between users via possibly blocking paths. It does this by using SuperNodes and Routing Nodes to transfer messages when direct client-to-client communication is impossible
The Skype protocol is propriatery and encrypted, so there is no way to control or audit the content of the messages.
Again through a characteristic of the Skype protocol, any Skype client can choose to become a Routing Node, potentially offering it's services to any client on the Internet.
Skype is designed as internet telephony protocol, and the voice functionality cannot be blocked. Using the voice functionality can cause unnecessary bandwidth usage and potential problems on the data network
The Skype client is closed source, and any claims of the encryption algorithms used in it have to be taken for granted, since there is no way to confirm them. So, nobody really knows whether Skype or anyone else can eavesdrop. Even if all claims are true, the usual problem is not with the algorithm, but with it's implementation. Bear in mind that one of iPhone hacker unlock mechanisms used a bug in the RSA encryption algorithm.
The Skype binary is unnaturally large, most of it is encrypted, and it contains numerous controls and hooks that are designed to prevent an active debugging tool to reverse engineer it. Also, it contains intentional garbage code and padding designed to confuse any dissecting of the file. This mess of a binary is an excellent place to hide an undesirable element like backdoor, trojan or spyware tool, which would not be easily detectable through standard spyware tools.
All passwords of the Skype users are kept on a centralized Skype Authentication Server. Skype claims that all passwords are irreversibly hashed. This fact as well as the hashing algorithm are impossible to confirm. This may not be a problem for private use, but in a corporate environment a large number of employees use the same password for all their business applications, so it is quite possible that they will use the same password for Skype, potentially releasing this password in the wild.

So, here is a summary of the pitfalls of using skype:

All users must be allowed to connect to some servers on the internet to log on to the Skype network. This connection can be used to piggy-back an attack through the authenticated outbound session.
No possibility to perform any audit on the communication - a corporate must!
No possibility to block voice, thus opening the potential for bandwidth hogging
No guarantees on what is within the Skype code
No guarantees on Skype passwords
No guarantees on Skype encryption

One must stress that these pitfalls mostly affect the organization as a whole (SysAdmins, NetAdmins, Security, Internal Audit et.c.), while the individual users are usually very happy to be served by Skype.

It is my strong opinion that the goal of easier corporate communication, is not well served by Skype

To address this goal, the corporation should implement an internal corporate messaging tool that has the following functions:

Possibility for fine grained activation/deactivation of available services (text, voice, video, file transfer)
Possibility for audit of both administrative events (logon, logoff) as well as messages
Fully internal infrastructure, thus eliminating the requirement for internet access.

Also, with the advent of IP Telephony in the corporate world, the corporation should decide on a strategic selection of product that will complement the IP Telephony, not compete or conflict with it.

New expected Blackberries to add to your corporate style

Blackberry devices are very popular with corporate users and businesses, where they are mainly used to provide e-mail access to roaming employees. However, recently the company has introduced its low range devices to target general users like Blackberry Curve 8520. At present, BlackBerry is the world's second most popular Smartphone platform after Nokia, capturing 21% of worldwide Smartphone sales in Q3, 2009 as compared to 16% in last year.

Being at number two, everybody loves to read about the rumors of new Blackberry devices and what will be the new features of the next BlackBerry?

New Blackberry devices

Recently, the company has released its highly anticipated Storm 2, which is the second Touchscreen Smartphone developed by the company. The Storm2 by default is SIM locked, but can be subsequently unlocked to use on any GSM network by obtaining code from respective provider.

Meanwhile, it is reported that RIM will launch about 16 new BlackBerry devices in 2010.  It seems that BlackBerry Essex will be the next in line and Blackberry 9100 aka Striker, Blackberry Curve 8530 will follow it soon.

The new devices will certainly designed in a way that they can compete with various new Smartphones from its competitors like Nokia, Apple, Samsung, Palm etc. It is assumed that the devices will have Wi-Fi support, new trackpad and Touchscreen. However, the company has neither provided any roadmap for the next year nor it detailed any of the devices.

According to sources, some of the forthcoming models of the Blackberry will have features:

1)  Blackberry Essex: The device is said to be the new version of Blackberry Tour which supports 3G, CDMA, and Wi-Fi connectivity. Also, it will have a trackpad and new applications that will certainly amuse its users.
2)  Blackberry 9100 aka Striker: It is the updated version of Blackberry Pearl, but featuring 3G and trackpad. It is reported that the device is slimmer than Blackberry 9700 or Bold 2 which will provide the phone an attractive look.
3)  Blackberry Curve 8530: Similar to Curve 8520, the new device is designed for CDMA carriers. It will be expected to announce soon.

Front-facing cameras to debut on BlackBerry in 2010

According to sources, Research in Motion is apparently planning to bring the latest iterations with front facing camera. The company is planning to tweak the design of its Blackberries and making them more useful for corporate users.

The front facing camera will be a help for video conferencing and the launch is expected by early 2010. Nokia has already its products in the market supporting the same form factors.

RIM’s new “Services Platform” for BlackBerry Developers

Last week, RIM has introduced a new services platform for developers, which will enhance various useful applications for the upcoming Blackberry devices. The new applications will streamline business processes on BlackBerry Smartphones.

The new services platform will offer advertising, payment, content push and new location services. Also, the platform will design various responsive, location-aware, revenue-generating applications, for example BlackBerry Advertising Service, BlackBerry Payment Service, BlackBerry Push Service etc. It is predicted that these applications will be available in 2010.
