When I decided that I wanted a smart phone, I knew that I wanted to get it unlocked. I wanted to be able to take full advantage of my phones capabilities, and I did not want to deal with the cell phone provider's unnecessary restrictions. After paying so much money for my phone, I did not want to pay too much money to get it unlocked. So, I just had the friend of a friend take care of it for me. That turned out to be a big mistake.
After I got my phone back, I thought that everything was fine. I was able to do what I wanted with my phone. Within a week though, my phone started acting really weird. It started dropping calls, and it would not install new software properly. Eventually, it would not even recognize my SIM card. At this point, I could not make any calls at all. My phone would not even charge properly. I found out later that the guy that I had paid to unlock my phone had switched my phone's battery for a cheaper one.
Because I had gotten my phone unlocked I could not take it back to my cell phone provider for repair. Unlocking a phone invalidates your warranty. I was fine with that, and I was willing to take the risk. However, I did not know that my phone was going to start having problems immediately.
When my phone stopped working altogether, I had to purchase a new one. This time I had professionals unlock my phone. I was happy with the results, and my phone had no problems. Do not let someone try to unlock your phone unless you know for certain that they know what they are doing. I did that, and it turned out to be a huge mistake. An unlocked phone can be a valuable piece of equipment, but if someone unlocks your phone and it no longer works properly, it will basically be worthless. Do not make my same mistake. Leave the phone unlocking to the professionals.

SIM stands for Subscriber Identity Module. It allows users to change phones while maintaining all information from their previous phone. SIM Cards are available in two standard sizes. The first is a credit card size but the newer and much more common fit is a width of 25 mm, a length of 15 mm and a thickness of 0.76 mm. A GSM phone is not directly linked to you|GSM phones are not binded to your device. Rather, it has a removable card, called a SIM (subscriber information module) and this Card has a unique number on it. This is what identifies you to your wirless provider
Generally cell phone service works so that the unique serial number in your cellular phones (its ESN) is used by the cell phone provider to identify you and connenct you to their network. The wireless carrier 'knows' that a particular mobile phone's serial number is your mobile phone and knows to send phone calls to that phone when someone dials your cell phone.
The important difference about this is that you can put your SIM into any compatible phone (rarely are gsm phones not compatible) and that phone will now act as your mobile phone, because sees the SIM that is tied to your account in the phone. They couldlnt care less that you've transferred phones, all they care about is if they can deliver service to your SIM
And now for the really glamorous part of this. In theory, you can transfer your SIM to any phone, the other way is also true. Any phone can communicate with any SIM card. So, if you've already bought an expensive cellular phone that you enjoy and have learned how to use, if you change from one GSM network to a new one, you don't have to shell out money for a new phone. You can keep the phone you've grown accustmed to, and all you need to do is swap the first gsm carrier's SIM with your new service provider's SIM.
But, some wireless providers 'lock' their phones, meaning that their phones have been programmed to only work with SIM cards issued by them. Repealing that programming - unlocking your mobile phone so it can work with any GSM carrier - is what this is all about.
